Four prestigious water related Prizes were awarded on the occasion of the 5th World Water Forum: The Turkish Republic Prime Minister's Water Prize, The King Hassan II Great World Water Prize, which was established through a partnership with the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco, Kyoto World Water Grand Prize and the "Compromiso Mexico" Water Prize.
King Hassan II Great World Water Prize: With the main theme of "Cooperation and solidarity in the fields of management and development in water resources", this Prize (US$ 100,000) is awarded to an institution, organization, individual or group of individuals in honour of their outstanding lifetime achievements in any aspects of water resources.
** The prize winner was Abdulatif Yousef Al-Hamad, Director General of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.
Kyoto World Water Grand Prize: This Prize showcases grassroots initiatives that aim to improve the water-related situation of local communities around the world. 30 pre-selected candidates were invited to the 5th World Water Forum to present their activities and compete for the Prize money of 3 million JPY (around 28,000 USD), to be used to fund the continuation of their activities.
***The prize winner was the Watershed Organization Trust from India.
Turkish Republic Prime Minister's Water Prize: For journalistic excellence in the coverage of issues related to the theme of the 5th World Water Forum, “Bridging Divides for Water.”
** The prize money of 40,000 Euros was shared between one international winner (Alison Bartle of Aqua-Media International) and four Turkish winners (Özgür Coban (Anatolian Agency), Özgür Yildirim (Channel 24), and Gurhan Savgi (Zaman Daily Newspaper), and for the programme Yeşil Ekren on NTV (accepted by Erman Yerdelen)
"Compromiso Mexico" Water Prize : This prize rewards the best local public policies that have had a positive impact on the drinking water, sewerage and sanitation services in the communities they interact with.
** First place of $ 15,000 USD was awarded to Guangzhou Province, China, second prize of $ 10,000 went to León, Guanajuato, Mexico, and Lima, Peru, picked up the third prize of $ 5,000.
