The 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit was held in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan on 3-4 December, with the participation of top-level decision makers from the Asia-Pacific region. Chaired by former Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshiro Mori, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Water Forum's Governing Council, the Summit welcomed representatives from approximately 50 countries to exchange on the central theme of "Water Security: Leadership and Commitment", resulting in the following "Message from Beppu" (PDF, 141KB)
The WWC and the 5th World Water Forum assured their presence in the expo area and through the organisation of an open event to explain the 5th Forum preparatory process and its Asia-Pacific regional component. In particular, it was noted that the policy briefs produced by the Summit would be carefully integrated into the Forum's political process, also serving as an important model for other regions to follow in the coming months.
WWC President, Mr. Fauchon, and Prof. Akça from the Turkish Ministry of Environment were given the opportunity to address the Summit participants during the Summit's closing ceremony, inviting all those present to make water a true political priority and to make a lasting impact together through the Istanbul Forum.
